“It’s the unknown that worries us,” said Hilary Sanchez, a West Cornwall resident. “If the zoning is changed from Residential to General Commercial, we could be looking at anything from a retail center, to a transfer trucking facility, to a printing firm that operates all night long. Who knows. We don’t, and that’s what scares us.” Sanchez is referring to approximately 10 acres of land on the southeast corner of routes 72 and 419. “That intersection is already strained, and additional traffic spilling out from that property onto 419 [between the Sunoco and Quentin Hunt] would add to the congestion.”
Additional concerns of the residents include an inevitable change in the quiet nature of life in West Cornwall, along with the possible devaluation of some properties. “I just don’t understand why this particular parcel of land should be rezoned, especially when its owners own yet another 36 acres of land immediately south of it that’s already zoned General Commercial,” added another resident.
On January 17, two West Cornwall Township supervisors heard from approximately a dozen concerned residents. Two days later, some West Cornwall residents received letters stating that the township has delayed “the decision on this matter until the regular monthly meeting in March.”
Until then, proactive West Cornwall residents will continue to circulate fliers and petitions, voice their concerns through various means, and consult with experts. They have also scheduled a February 9 meeting for interested parties. The meeting will be held at 7:00 in the evening at 1402 Quentin Road.
We also urge you to contact the supervisors of West Cornwall Township to express your concerns…
